Powerful earthquakes, devastating floods, storms, fires, and other disasters repeatedly strike different regions of the world. Within minutes, cities and villages are destroyed, thousands of people lose their homes, and lives that seemed secure only a few hours earlier suddenly come to an end. 

In recent years, the world has watched in horror the images of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the earthquake in Morocco, and the catastrophic floods in Libya. And the year 2026 has brought new powerful earthquakes and new floods, showing us once again how fragile human life is and how quickly everything a person considers secure can change.

But we must ask ourselves a far more important question:

Are all these merely natural disasters, or are they also warnings through which God is calling the world to repentance?

The Bible shows us that God is not a powerless spectator of history. He is the Creator of heaven and earth, and all creation is under His authority.

The Lord Jesus warned that times would come when the world would be shaken: “And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” Luke 21:11

He also spoke about the distress caused by the sea and the waves: “And on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring.” Luke 21:25

Earthquakes and floods are warnings for us all

When we see such calamities, we should not say that the people in the affected regions are necessarily more sinful than we are. The Lord Jesus addressed this very issue. When eighteen people died after the tower in Siloam fell on them, He asked: “Do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:4–5

This is one of the most solemn warnings of the Lord Jesus. The message was not only for those upon whom the tower had fallen. The message was addressed to those who had remained alive. In the same way, we should view the earthquakes and floods we see today.

When a city is destroyed by an earthquake, let us not say, “Those people were worse than we are.” When floodwaters sweep away houses and villages, let us not think that the warning is only for the people who live there.

But the warning is for the whole world. For Europe. For America. For Asia. For Africa.

For every person who lives without God. The message of the Lord Jesus remains: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”

God sends warning judgments

Earthquakes and floods should remind us that God is the Judge of all the earth.

What we see now may be understood as warning judgments through which God allows people to see how fragile the world in which they have placed their trust is, and calls them to return to their Creator.

They are not yet the final judgment. They are warnings. God warns before He judges. He warned the world before the Flood. He warned the city of Nineveh through the prophet Jonah. He warned Israel through the prophets. And today God continues to warn the world through His Word.

Therefore, when the earth shakes, when waters overflow their banks, and when people discover how powerless they are before the forces of creation, they should hear the call:

Repent and return to God!

The fact that you have not been struck does not mean that you are better. It means that you have still been given time. Time to repent. Time to confess your sins. Time to be reconciled to God.

If people do not repent, the judgment will be far more severe

The Bible warns us that God’s future judgments will be far more severe than what we see today. The Book of Revelation describes a time when God will judge a world that has repeatedly rejected His call.

Of one of the future earthquakes it is written: “And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.” Revelation 16:18

Think about this. Today we see how much destruction a powerful earthquake can cause in a single region. But the Bible speaks of judgments incomparably greater.

If humanity continues to reject God’s call to repentance, it should not believe that God will tolerate sin forever.

The apostle Peter warns: “But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” 2 Peter 3:7

Why has this judgment not yet come? Because God is still showing great patience: “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

Every day in which the final judgment has not come is another day of grace.

But God’s grace must not be confused with indifference toward sin. God calls people to repentance before judgment comes.

Do not wait until disaster reaches you

Perhaps you watch a city destroyed by an earthquake on television and say, “What a tragedy!” Perhaps you see people fleeing from floodwaters and say, “How terrible!” Then you turn off the television and continue with your life.

But God calls you to ask yourself: What if I had been there? What if this had been my last day? Am I ready to stand before God?

Do not wait for the next earthquake. Do not wait for the next flood. Do not wait for the next war. Do not wait for an even greater judgment. And above all, do not wait until the warning reaches your own home.

Today you are alive. Today you can hear the Gospel. Today you can be reconciled to God.

How can you be reconciled to God?

God does not only warn people about judgment. He has also provided the way of salvation. That way is the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Son of God came into the world and gave His life for sinners. He said: “I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.”

John 10:17–18

John the Baptist pointed Him out to the people, saying: “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

The Lord Jesus died on the cross and bore the punishment for sin. Therefore, today there is a way to be reconciled to God. But a person must respond to His call.

Repent: turn away from sin and return to God

Repentance does not merely mean saying that you are sorry. It does not mean becoming emotional when you see a tragedy and then continuing to live the same life. Repentance means turning from sin to God.

It means acknowledging before Him that you have sinned. It means no longer justifying sin. It means turning away from sin and desiring to live in obedience to God.

Confess your sins to God. Ask Him for forgiveness. Put your heartfelt faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in His sacrifice on the cross. Ask Him to free you from the bondage of sin and give you a new life.

The Lord Jesus says: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36

Do not say, “I will repent later.” This may be one of the most dangerous decisions of your life. You do not know whether you will have a “later.” People caught by earthquakes did not know, when they woke up that morning, what was going to happen. People caught by floods did not know that within a few hours their homes could be swept away by the waters. No one is guaranteed tomorrow.

Therefore, if God is speaking to you today: Do not delay. If you are living in sin: Repent. If you are far from God: Return to Him. If you have not placed your faith in the Lord Jesus: Believe in His sacrifice and be reconciled to God.

Judgment is approaching, but for those who belong to Christ there is hope

For the person who belongs to the Lord Jesus, these warnings should not produce despair. The Lord Jesus said to those who belong to Him:

“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21:28 But He also told us: “Watch therefore, and pray always...” Luke 21:36

The Christian must watch. The Christian must pray. The Christian must live in holiness. The Christian must proclaim the Gospel. The Christian must warn those who live far from God. For the day will come when the time of warnings will end and judgment will begin.

Earthquakes and Floods – Hear the Warning While There Is Still Time

The earthquakes and floods we see should not lead us only to ask, “Where will the next disaster occur?” The far more important question is: “If I had to stand before God today, am I ready?”

Scripture says: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!”

Hebrews 10:31 And: “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:15

God warns the world before judgment. Do not despise the warning. Do not assume that because the disaster occurred thousands of miles away, the message is not for you.

The Lord Jesus says: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Today is still a time of grace. Today reconciliation is still possible. Today the Lord Jesus is still proclaimed as the Savior of sinners.

Therefore: Repent. Turn away from sin. Believe from your heart in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Be reconciled to God while there is still time.

And if you already belong to the Lord Jesus, watch, pray, and lift up your head, because He said: “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” Luke 21:28
