The Signs of the Times and the Spiritual Decline of the Present Age

Human history is not heading toward a self-sustaining utopia, but toward an outcome governed entirely by divine sovereignty.

The Hebrew Scriptures of the Old Testament and the writings of the New Testament harmoniously converge to provide a detailed description of the events that will mark the end of this age, which has been corrupted by sin. Far from being a set of predictions intended to alarm or sensationalize, these prophecies were given for the specific purpose of offering God’s people warning, guidance, and deep comfort in the midst of periods of spiritual and social darkness.

One of the first major milestones in this prophetic sequence is analyzed in the Sermon on the Mount of Olives, recorded in the Gospels of Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21. In this foundational discourse, Jesus Christ answers His disciples’ questions regarding the signs that will precede His Second Coming and the end of the age. He uses a highly evocative metaphor, calling the first global crises “the beginning of birth pangs.” This analogy indicates that, once the labor pains of history begin, the sufferings and upheavals on earth will increase exponentially in frequency and intensity, becoming irreversible until the final outcome.

The first and most dangerous sign indicated by the Savior is widespread spiritual deception. Scripture warns that numerous “false Christs” and false prophets who, through seemingly supernatural manifestations and manipulative rhetoric, will claim to represent God, succeeding in leading entire multitudes astray from the unchanging truth of the Gospel. This apostasy and religious confusion will be accompanied by a collapse of geopolitical and global stability. Wars, rumors of wars, nations rising against one another, chronic famine, devastating epidemics (plagues), and repeated earthquakes in various places will become everyday realities. Parallel to the degradation of nature and society, there will be a profound cooling of Christian love and an explosion of lawlessness. Nevertheless, despite the growing hostility, a great promise remains in effect: the Gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed as a testimony to all nations throughout the earth before the actual end comes (Matthew 24:14).

The Rapture of the Church and the Outbreak of the Great Tribulation

While the world will be immersed in the routines of everyday life—marked by daily activities such as eating, drinking, trading, building, and marrying, just as it was in the days of Noah before the Flood or in the days of Lot in Sodom—an event of sudden and radical nature will occur: the Rapture of the Church. Jesus Christ spoke explicitly in Luke 17:34–36 about a day of instantaneous separation, in which, of two people in the same bed or in the same field, one will be taken and the other left behind.

This supernatural phenomenon is theologically detailed by the Apostle Paul in his first epistle to the Thessalonians (4:16–17). The text describes the Lord’s descent from heaven with a commanding shout, accompanied by the voice of an archangel and the trumpet of God. In a fraction of a second, those who have fallen asleep (the dead) in Christ will be raised first, and the believers who are still alive will be caught up, being raptured (a concept derived from the Greek term *harpazo*) together with them into the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. This bodily transformation, also mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:50–58, will mean that believers will be clothed in new, glorious bodies, completely immune to disease, sin, or physical decay. Subsequently, they will appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ (Bema Seat) not for salvation or condemnation, but for an assessment of their faithfulness and to receive heavenly rewards (2 Corinthians 5:10), culminating in the mystical celebration known as the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:6–10).

According to the pre-tribulationist perspective reflected in the document, the Rapture serves to bring the Church to safety before the wrath specific to divine judgments is poured out upon a rebellious humanity. Once this restraining force is removed, a period of extreme tribulation—unprecedented in world history—will be established on earth, referred to in Matthew 24:21–22 as “the Great Tribulation.” The prophecies in the books of Daniel and Revelation outline this era of absolute crisis as lasting seven years, divided into two distinct phases of three and a half years each.

In the first phase, the world stage will be occupied and dominated by a charismatic global political leader, referred to in Scripture as “the Beast” or the Antichrist. He will capitalize on the widespread fear caused by the global collapse, promising stable peace and a resolution to the crises. However, this initial stability will be a crude facade, a fact symbolically illustrated in Revelation 6 through the opening of the first seals and the riding of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse: political conquest (the white horse) is immediately followed by bloody war (the red horse), severe famine (the black horse), and mass death (the pale horse).

Halfway through the seven-year period, the Antichrist, directly driven by satanic power, will reveal his true identity, demanding universal worship as a god, following an apparent death and resurrection. A religious accomplice, known as the False Prophet, will perform deceptive miracles and demand the erection of an image of the Beast. In this context, access to basic economic survival—the buying and selling of goods —will be strictly contingent upon receiving a restrictive mark on the hand or forehead, symbolically associated with the number 666, an element that foreshadows totalitarian control through monetary systems and centralized digital identities.

Divine grace will continue to work, albeit sporadically, through a special group of 144,000 sealed Jews who will recognize Jesus as the Messiah and evangelize the earth, yielding a vast spiritual harvest consisting of a great multitude of believers from all nations (Revelation 7). Most of these new converts will refuse to worship the image of the Beast and will suffer martyrdom by beheading, yet they will receive the promise of resurrection and holy vengeance at the end of the age.

The Glorious Intervention of the Lord Christ, Armageddon, and the Millennial Kingdom

The climax of the Great Tribulation will occur when demonic forces gather the armies of all the nations of the earth in the Middle East, at a place symbolically called Armageddon (Revelation 16:12–19), with the aim of wiping the faithful remnant from the face of the earth and launching a direct challenge against Heaven. This massive concentration of troops will trigger the glorious Second Coming of Jesus Christ to earth—this time not in the humble role of the “Man of Sorrows” destined for sacrifice (Isaiah 53), but in His rightful capacity as King of kings and Lord of lords, invested with the fullness of God’s power and judicial authority.

His intervention will be swift and devastating to the structures of human rebellion. Jesus Christ will destroy the coalition armies of the nations with a breath from His mouth. The Antichrist (the Beast) and the False Prophet will be captured alive and cast directly into the lake of fire and brimstone, the final destination of eternal punishment. At the same time, a mighty angel will descend from heaven, bind Satan (the Devil), and cast him into the dark Abyss (the Deep), sealing him there for a period of one thousand years, so that no direct demonic influence can any longer deceive or manipulate the peoples of the world (Revelation 20:1–3).

This military and spiritual victory will usher in an era of extraordinary splendor on earth, known as the Millennium or the Messianic Kingdom. Christ will establish His throne of reign in a fully restored and expanded Jerusalem, governing the entire planet with perfect righteousness. Under this ideal theocracy, human society will undergo radical structural transformations. All the destructive elements of oppressive modernity and the technology of war will be eliminated.

According to the masterful prophecy in Isaiah 2:3–4, the nations will make a pilgrimage to the mountain of the Lord’s house to be taught His ways, and universal law will go forth from Jerusalem and Zion. People will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; armed conflicts will cease entirely, and the art of war will no longer be taught or learned in any academy. The entire globe will be enveloped in supernatural material abundance, and nature itself will be partially freed from the curse of the earth, so that, as the prophet Isaiah declares (11:9), “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the depths of the sea are filled with the waters that cover it.” The resurrected saints and those previously raptured, clothed in their bodies of glory, will reign and govern the planet alongside Christ, providing a model of leadership based on righteousness and holiness.

The Annihilation of the Cosmos by the Fire of Divine Judgment

Although the Millennium will be a golden age of peace, righteousness, and the visible presence of Christ, human nature will reveal one final and dramatic vulnerability. At the end of the thousand years, in accordance with God’s sovereign plan, Satan will be released from his prison in the Abyss for a brief period. The purpose of this release is the final sifting of humanity. With astonishing speed, the Devil will succeed in gathering a vast multitude of people dissatisfied with the rigors of divine holiness, forming a final global coalition of rebels that will march to encircle the camp of the saints and beloved Jerusalem. This final insolent revolt, however, will be instantly crushed by fire sent down from heaven by God, and Satan will be cast forever into the lake of fire, where the Beast and the False Prophet already were, to be tormented for all eternity.

Immediately following this event, the history of the planet enters its phase of complete cosmic dissolution through the Judgment at the Great White Throne (Revelation 20:11–15). John describes a terrifying vision in which, before the Face of the One seated on the throne, the old earth and the material heavens fled, and no place was found for them. All the dead of all ages who did not participate in the first resurrection—that is, the unbelievers—will be physically resurrected to stand before God. The books recording their deeds will be opened, along with the Book of Life. Anyone not found written in the Book of Life will be cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death—eternal separation from the source of life.

The Apostle Peter draws a clear parallel between the destruction of the pre-Flood world by water and the final cataclysm by fire. He categorically states that the present heavens and earth are being kept and reserved by the same divine Word for the fire of the day of judgment and the destruction of the ungodly (2 Peter 3:7).

This cosmic act of purification and annihilation is described in apocalyptic terms: “The Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day, the heavens will pass away with a roar, the heavenly bodies will melt away in the intense heat, and the earth, along with everything on it, will be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). The entire material creation, structurally contaminated by centuries of sin, rebellion, curse, and demonic degradation, will undergo a process of shattering under the impact of the supernatural fire of God’s holiness and righteousness. Human works based on pride, idols, and rebellion will be completely destroyed. This cataclysm of fire represents the total deconstruction of the old cosmic order—a purifying melting intended to erase absolutely every trace or memory of evil and corruption from the universe.

In the face of this outcome, in which world history is inevitably heading toward complete destruction by the fire of divine judgment, the reality of the future must not leave us indifferent. Biblical prophecy is not merely a chronological description of future events, but a cosmic wake-up call and evidence of God’s great patience, for He does not wish for anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). If Scripture reveals these terrifying truths to us in advance—about the destruction of the old order and the grandeur of the new—it does so so that every soul may examine its standing before its Creator and seek salvation while the door of grace is still open.

The only way of salvation from the coming wrath and judgment is not found in human efforts, in morality, or in physical shelters, but exclusively in the Person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. He first came as “a Man of Sorrows, acquainted with grief,” taking upon Himself the sins of all humanity on the cross at Golgotha, offering Himself as a perfect sacrifice of atonement (Isaiah 53, 1 Timothy 2:5–6). He died in our place, bore the condemnation we deserved, and rose from the dead on the third day, conquering death and offering the right to eternal life to all who place their trust in Him. Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and humankind, the only Name given under heaven in which we have salvation.

Salvation becomes a personal reality in a person’s life through two fundamental and inseparable spiritual steps: repentance and faith. Repentance is not merely a temporary feeling of regret or emotional remorse, but represents a radical turning of the mind and heart away from sin, from worldly desires, and from a life lived independently of God, toward obedience to Him. It means acknowledging our personal spiritual failure, confessing our transgressions with a contrite spirit, and severing our ties with paganism once and for all (Titus 2:11–12). This turning is accompanied by a living and active faith, through which we receive Jesus Christ not merely as a historical Savior, but as the absolute Lord of our lives, placing our complete trust in His sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.

The times in which we live are marked by the utmost spiritual urgency. The signs of “the beginning of birth pangs” are already visible all around us through moral, geopolitical, and global crises, indicating that the Lord’s coming is imminent, and the Rapture of the Church could occur at any moment, at an hour when no one expects it (Matthew 24:44). Scripture warns us that those who refuse to be reconciled to God today will be left to face the terror of the Great Tribulation, the oppressive system of the Antichrist, and, ultimately, the lake of fire. That is why the call of the Gospel is one of the absolute present: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15). Forgiveness, a radical transformation of life, the receipt of a glorified body, and the inheritance of a place in the New Jerusalem are free gifts offered by grace, available right now.

Do not delay the decision that determines your eternal destiny. Repent and acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior, and secure your place in the new creation where death and suffering will be wiped away forever.
