Our country is going through a period of spiritual and moral decline similar to the period in the final days of the nation of Israel before the Babylonian captivity, a time when God raised up the prophet Jeremiah, the last prophet sent by God to preach in the Southern Kingdom, which comprised the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. 

God repeatedly warned the people of Israel to cease their idolatrous behavior, but they did not listen, so He divided the twelve tribes, having already sent the ten northern tribes into Assyrian captivity. Then God sent the prophet Jeremiah to warn the people of Judah one last time, before driving them out of the land, destroying the nation, and sending them into captivity in the pagan kingdom of Babylon because of their sin, for which they had not repented.

The people of Israel had become so hardened by the sin in which they indulged that they no longer feared God. The prophet Jeremiah preached for 40 years, but he never had any real success in changing the hearts and minds of the people. He tried to make the people understand that their problem was a lack of fear of God. It is very easy to rest in a false sense of security. The nation of Israel, like many nations today, had replaced the true God with false gods who would not make them feel guilty or condemn them for their sin. God delivered His people from Egyptian bondage, performed miracles before their eyes, and even parted the waters of the sea for them, but despite all these manifestations of God’s power, they returned to the false worship practices they had learned in Egypt, even making vows to the “queen of heaven” and practicing other rituals and customs that were part of Egyptian culture and religion.

The prophet Jeremiah warned the people of Israel not to cling to false hopes, saying, “This is the Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord! For only if you correct your ways and your deeds, if you do justice to one another, if you do not oppress the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow, if you do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own ruin, only then will I let you dwell in this place, in the land I gave to your ancestors, from everlasting to everlasting. But look—you are clinging to false hopes that serve no purpose. How so? You steal, you murder, you commit adultery, you swear falsely, you burn incense to Baal, you follow other gods whom you do not know…And then you come and present yourselves before Me in this House, over which My Name is called, and say, ‘We are saved!’—only to go back to doing all these abominations! (Jeremiah 7:4–10). God’s judgment on this people was severe: “I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness, the songs of the bridegroom and the songs of the bride, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for the land will become a desolation!” (Jeremiah 7:34).

The Romanian people, however, are committing the same sins as the Jewish people of old, even though they claim to be Christian. We are a country with a high level of corruption, leading Europe in human trafficking and prostitution; we organize processions with relics as in the Middle Ages; priests wallow in wealth and fornication; monks are homosexual, pastors are greedy for wealth, and they welcome into the church people who lead double lives, enslaved by sin, yet who are reassured that they are saved. For, from the least to the greatest, all are greedy for dishonest gain; from the prophet to the priest, all deceive! They lightly bandage the wound of My people’s daughter, saying, “Peace! Peace!” And yet there is no peace (Jeremiah 8:10–11).

We even have the audacity to consider ourselves better than other nations in Europe, but in reality, the Romanian nation has not repented of its sins. “The harvest is over, the summer has ended, and we are still not saved!” (Jeremiah 8:10). The people of Israel in the time of the prophet Jeremiah did not want to hear what he had to say, and his warning about judgment angered them. The same is true today, when believers who follow God’s instructions warn the lost world—which is in mortal danger—of the judgment that is about to fall upon it, yet they pay no heed to the warnings.

That is why God has prepared punishment against our country, just as in the time of the prophet Jeremiah: “And the Lord said to me, ‘From the north, disaster will come upon all the inhabitants of the land. For behold, I will summon all the nations of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord, “and they will come and each will set up his throne at the entrance to the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. I will pronounce My judgments against them because of all their wickedness, for they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods and worshiped the work of their own hands.” (Jeremiah 1:14–15).

God will allow the king of Russia, who is possessed by the spirit of Gog—a demon rebelling against God—to launch an attack against our country to judge all the sins of this nation, unless the Romanian people repent. This is God’s message for our times. God is the only one who can protect our country from the disastrous consequences of a war, yet the Romanians have rejected God and are rapidly heading toward their own destruction.

In reality, although Romania is the country most vulnerable to an attack by Russia—one we could not withstand—and although we hear daily threats from the Russian leadership against Romania, the population is lulled into a false sense of peace. Romania’s hope lies in the NATO countries or in America, but these nations have turned away from God. Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man, who relies on a mortal and turns his heart away from the Lord!” (Jeremiah 17:5).

Just as the Jewish people placed their hope in Egypt—that broken reed that pricks and pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it—so too do the Romanian people place their hope in America, France, or the NATO alliance; but, unfortunately, these countries or alliances are led by people who publicly profess to be against God, who live in and promote homosexuality and rebellion against God.

God will deliver the inhabitants of our country into the hands of the evil one because they have forsaken the ways of the Lord and have not repented when the prophets sent by Him called them to repentance: “They stiffened their necks and hardened their hearts so much that they did not return to the Lord, the God of Israel. All the leaders of the priests and the people also multiplied their transgressions, following all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the House of the Lord, which He had consecrated in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their fathers, had sent His messengers to warn them from the very beginning, for He wanted to spare His people and His dwelling place. But they mocked God’s messengers, disregarded His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the Lord’s anger against His people became irreparable. Then the Lord brought the king of the Chaldeans against them, and he killed their young men with the sword in the sanctuary of their holy place. He spared neither young man nor young woman, neither the elderly nor the man bent over under the weight of his white hair, but delivered them all into his hand. They burned the House of God, tore down the walls of Jerusalem, set fire to all its houses, and destroyed all its precious possessions. (2 Chronicles 36:13–19).

The good news is that even in Jeremiah’s time, there were some Jews who listened to the prophet’s voice, followed his advice, and saved their lives. Will this also be the case for some of the Romanian people? Will they seek to listen to God’s voice and correct their ways? The most important thing is to repent and believe that God sent His Son to die so that He might forgive our sins. That is why God’s call is for you to repent of your sins—if you have not already done so—to read the Word of God, to obey it, and to seek fellowship with holy people who seek God with all their hearts. Amen!
