In the Gospel according to Mark, we are told that the Lord Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea: “He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: ‘Be still! Be quiet!’ The wind died down, and there was a great calm. Then He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ They were filled with great fear, and they asked one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:35–41).

The Word of the Lord tells us that in His presence spirits fall into a trance, and the angels in heaven cannot stand before Him without covering their faces with their wings. Before Him, the elders cast down their crowns of praise, and all of heaven bursts into praise. The entire Scripture speaks of Him; the whole universe was created through Him, and all things are sustained by His power and for His sake. But only if we see Him today by faith as He truly is will we be able to enjoy His glory in heaven.

In the situation described above, the Lord Jesus performed a miracle over nature, demonstrating His power as Creator. He was in the boat with His disciples as a man, after having spent the entire day preaching the Gospel and serving God by performing miracles. A great storm arose, and His disciples, who were fishermen, were terrified. The Lord Jesus took Peter with Him into the boat; and at his first encounter with the Lord, Peter had said, “Lord, depart from me, for I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8). This is the proper attitude that every person should have when encountering God—an attitude of acknowledging that we are sinners.

This unusually fierce storm frightened even people who were accustomed to going out to sea to fish. Thus, even though the disciples were accustomed to the sea and had seen so many miracles performed by the Lord Jesus right before their eyes, they feared they would die. They had no reason to worry because the Son of God Himself was with them in the boat. Jesus stood up and commanded those huge waves to stop. With just two words spoken by Him—“Be still, you speechless waves!”—the waves calmed down and the storm ceased. The disciples were speechless because they had never seen anything like this before. For a man to command the sea to be still, and for it to obey. At that moment, the disciples, filled with fear, asked themselves, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” (Mark 4:35–41) They asked this question because they did not know Him as He truly is. We must know who He is because our eternal life depends on this knowledge: “Jesus said to Philip, ‘Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.’” (John 14:9).

The Word of God tells us that the Lord Jesus is the rightful King of the Jews who came to take the throne of David (Matthew 2:2), the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David (Revelation 5:5). He is the King of the ages, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6), the King of heaven who came to earth (Matthew 10:7), the King of glory, as David said, before whom the gates of heaven are opened (Psalm 24:7–10). He is the King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15),  and before Him every knee will bow—of those in heaven, on earth, or under the earth—and He will reign for a thousand years on this earth (Zechariah 14:4).

He is the Commander of the Lord’s army (Joshua 5:14) and the One who caused the walls of Jericho to fall to the ground. He is the valiant warrior who defends truth, gentleness, and righteousness (Psalm 45:3,4) and who will emerge victorious when the kingdoms of the world rise up to fight against Him at Armageddon (Revelation 16:16).

He is the Son of God, the only Son of God, whom God has exalted above all things and all people, because He obeyed His voice even unto death. According to the apostle Peter’s confession, He is the One who is building His Church today, and “the gates of Hades will not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18). “In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). He is the Head of the body of the Church, and from Him comes every blessing from above.

He is the Prophet foretold by Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15), yet a far greater Prophet than Moses—one who existed before him and who will exist for all eternity. He is the One who said to Moses: “I AM!” from the burning bush in the wilderness (Exodus 3:14), the eternal High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 5:10) who intercedes for us before the Father.

The Lord Jesus is far wiser than King Solomon or any other man on this earth ever was. He is wisdom incarnate. He is the Beloved, the One who was rejected and exalted far more than Joseph ever was. That is why the entire heavens proclaim His glory before Him. Their expanse testifies to the work of His hands.

He is the Indescribable One; the human mind cannot comprehend Him. The heavens of the heavens cannot contain Him (2 Chronicles 6:18). No one knows the truth and the future except Him, who is the First and the Last, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” “the One who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8, 17). He is unstoppable, the Blameless One, whom death could not hold, whom the grave could not keep. He who had no predecessor or successor and who will love us to the very end.

He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). He is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The true Light of the world (John 1:9). He is the Temple built by God. The Bread of Life (John 6:35). Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The Living Water (John 4:14); whoever is thirsty and drinks of this water will never thirst again.

He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11) and who sits at the right hand of God, interceding for us and preparing a place for His bride, the Church. He will come as Judge of all who have rejected Him and have not accepted salvation as a free gift (John 3:39). Every knee will bow before Him, even those who have mocked Him. He will receive His glory. He is our legal Redeemer (Galatians 4:5), but one day He will also be the avenger of the blood that has been shed.

As the Son of Man, He was born of a woman so that we might be born of God. He humbled Himself so that we might be heirs with Him, He became a servant so that we might become heirs; He was rejected by people so that we might be accepted by God; He allowed Himself to be bound so that we might be set free from the chains of sin; He gave Himself up to death so that we might have eternal life. While He lived on earth, He blessed children; He was tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. He was the One who cleansed the lepers, came to the aid of the needy, set the captives free, paid the debts of those who were indebted to God, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead, and forgave sinners (Luke 4:18). He is the gate for the sheep that leads to salvation, the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11).

He is the sacrifice offered in place of Isaac, at the place still called today “The Place Where the Lord Will Provide” (Genesis 22:14) The first fruit of those raised from the dead, full of grace and truth, who does not look at a person’s appearance and does not judge anyone by their outward appearance. Through His sacrifice, He has shown how great God’s love is for us (John 15:13).

Today He is alive and gives strength to the weak; He comes to the aid of those who are tempted; He understands us, saves us completely if we draw near to Him with humility and repentance, and rewards us if we walk in His Way.  His promises are sure, His goodness is boundless, His light is immeasurable, His grace is sufficient, His love will never change, His mercy endures forever, and His Word stands for all time.  His yoke is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:28), and He is a refuge whenever the enemy pursues us (Psalm 18:2).

His name is above every name (Philippians 2:9). “His head and hair were white like white wool, like snow; His eyes were like a flame of fire; His feet were like burnished bronze, as if refined in a furnace; and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars. From His mouth came a sharp, double-edged sword, and His face was like the sun shining in all its strength” (Revelation 14:16).

Have you come to know Him as described above? We are still in the Lord’s year of mercy, and we must make the best use of the time remaining to come to know the Righteous One so that we may save our souls and present ourselves before Him pure and blameless. “And this is eternal life: to know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” ⁽John 17:3).
