The officers replied, “No one has ever spoken like this man” (John 7:46). In this context, the officers had been sent by the priests of Israel because the people were divided over Him. Some of the people said that He was truly the Prophet; others said that He was the Christ; and still others said that the Christ could not possibly come from Galilee^.

But what was evident to most of them was that no one had ever spoken like Him, for He alone had spoken the eternal truths about God: “I tell you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I am He.” (John 13:19). The Lord Jesus said this in accordance with what is written in the book of Exodus (Exodus 3:14) and Isaiah (Isaiah 48:1–17), where God’s self-revelation was unique among all the gods made by human hands. The phrase “I am” corresponds to the words God spoke to Moses: “I am who I am… the One who is called ‘I am’” (Exodus 3:14). The Lord Jesus also affirmed that He is (Jehovah). In the Garden of Gethsemane, when He said that He is (Jehovah), the band of soldiers fell to the ground (John 18:6).

Below, we will present twelve truths spoken by the Lord Jesus about Himself that confirm that He is God (John 18:37).

1. The Lord Jesus affirms that He is the Messiah.

When the Lord Jesus spoke with the Samaritan woman and revealed the secrets of her heart, He said that He is the Messiah awaited by the Jews (John 4:26).

Likewise, when asked by the governor Pilate if He was the King of the Jews, Jesus replied that He is a King: “For this I was born, and for this I came into the world—to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice” (John 18:37).

2. The Lord Jesus affirms that He is the Son of God.

At the time of the Lord Jesus’ baptism, a voice from heaven was heard saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). God the Father Himself testified that Jesus is His Son.

After healing the man born blind, the Lord Jesus testified about Himself, saying that He is the Son of God and that “He came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”(John 9:35–39). He performed many other signs and wonders that are not all recorded in the Gospel. But these things were written so that we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and, by believing, have life in His name (John 20:30–31).

The Jews believed that the Messiah who was to come would be descended only from the line of David and would be human. That is why the Lord Jesus challenged them and asked them the following question while the Pharisees were gathered together: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” “David’s,” they replied. And Jesus said to them, “How then does David, inspired by the Spirit, call Him ‘Lord,’ when he says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet’”? So if David calls Him “Lord,” how can He be his son?”

Jesus was more than just a human descendant of the line of David. He was born of God through the Holy Spirit and fulfilled what had been prophesied through Isaiah: “For a Child has been born to us, a Son has been given to us, and the government will rest on His shoulder; His name shall be called: ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’” (Isaiah 9:56).

3. The Lord Jesus affirms that He is the Son of Man.

The Gospels frequently mention the Lord Jesus’ use of the title “Son of Man.” The first mention of the Son of Man appears in the Gospel of Matthew: “Foxes have dens and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20). It also appears in the conversation Jesus had with Nicodemus: “No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—that is, the Son of Man, who is in heaven” (John 3:13). But this expression is also frequently used in the Old Testament, as in the prophecy of Daniel: “I watched in my night visions, and behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven; he approached the Ancient of Days and was brought before Him” (Daniel 7:13–14). Here, the term “Son of Man” is a messianic title, and to the Lord Jesus were given dominion, glory, and a kingdom. When the Lord Jesus used this expression, He applied this prophecy about the Son of Man to Himself.

4. The Lord Jesus affirms that He can forgive sins.

Jesus often affirmed that He has the power to forgive sins, a prerogative that belongs only to God. That is why the scribes and Pharisees grumbled in their hearts when the Lord Jesus forgave sins: “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins— I command you,” He said to the paralytic, “get up, pick up your mat, and go home” (Luke 5:24).

5. The Lord Jesus affirms that He existed before He was born.

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, ‘I am’” (John 8:58). He could have said, “I was,” but He did not, because He wanted to make it clear that what He was saying was more than mere pre-existence; it was the existence of “I Am” before He was born. Before Abraham was, “I Am.” Such a concept was difficult for the human mind to grasp.

6. The Lord Jesus affirms that He came into the world as the Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep.

He wants to make His death the key to eternal life for His sheep. “I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). In other words, His death is the key that unlocks our eternal existence with Him in heaven.

7. The Lord Jesus affirms that He is the only way to God.

“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). “I am the light of the world; whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12) . No one else has ever declared so emphatically that He is the way, the truth, the life, and the light; and if you do not believe in Him, He says you will remain in darkness forever.

8. The Lord Jesus declares that He is the bread, the water, and eternal life.

“I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35) If we come to Him, the thirst of our souls will be quenched. “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst again. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).

“My sheep hear My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27)  

9. The Lord Jesus affirms that He baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

John the Baptist said that the Lord Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit: “As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance; but the One who comes after me is mightier than I, and I am not worthy to carry His sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Matthew 3:11). “Whoever believes in Me, rivers of living water will flow from within him, as the Scripture says.” He spoke these words about the Spirit, whom those who believe in Him would receive. For the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified” (John 7:38, 39). Only the One God can send the Holy Spirit upon people.

10. The Lord Jesus affirms that we can do nothing without Him.

“I am the true Vine, and My Father is the Gardener.” “I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me, and in whom I abide, bears much fruit; for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:1, 5).

All things were made through Him, and nothing that was made was made without Him. He sustains the universe by the power of His Word. And no one does any work for God unless they are grafted into Him. These statements are overwhelming.

11. The Lord Jesus declares that He is the one who raises people from the dead at the end of history.

 “I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, even if they die, will live.”

(John 11:25). “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:40). 

Other passages in the Bible state that “the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will be raised to life. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself” (John 5:25, 26).

12. The Lord Jesus affirms that He is the supreme glory that will fulfill us forever in the age to come.

The Lord Jesus’ victory on the cross makes us partakers of His glory: “Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory—the glory You have given Me— for You loved Me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24).

Your ultimate destiny is to spend eternity gazing upon Him, looking at Him, being fulfilled in Him, marveling at Him, at all that He is, and at all that He has done. It will take an eternity to fully comprehend the glory of the Lord Jesus.
